Almost Home

As I am writing this, we are less than 1 hour away from the streets of Stewie. The trip has been incredible. The kids from Zion have been the best! Everyone of the chaperones has had some unbelievable discussions with their small groups. Anna asked them what they enjoyed most about the gathering. It wasn't the dances at night, the food we ate, or the interaction center. They all said one of following: The homeless shelter, the incredible speakers, the music, meeting new people, the live lip-dub, the entire dome experience! WOW.... Truly amazing answers from some amazing kids! God moved through out the city of New Orleans this past week...and we are so lucky to have been part of it. Thanks for sharing your youth with us...we love them and loved sharing this life changing experience with them...Detroit 2015... I wonder how many of these young people will be there.

We just entered Minnesota.... see you shortly!!!

Final Day In The Big Easy

The morning began with an early up to load the bus before heading to worship. We took our time getting to worship and sat in the upper level. Worship began with the house band warm-up songs and then a very cool progression of lights were carried into the dome through the aisles by many young people!

Bishop Hanson delivered a powerful message challenging our youth to continue to knock down the walls of injustice in the world. He proclaimed that God has already knocked down the walls through Jesus... let's not allow them to be built again. After communing with 33,000 people in the Superdome, worship came to a close with the words: See you in Detroit for the 2012 National Youth Gathering!

We boarded the bus and headed out on our journey home. Our wonderful bus driver, Tom, picked up some box lunches for us and we ate on the road and then for awhile there were only 2 people awake on the bus... just me and the bus driver. (I am really glad Tom is awake!)

Well, we arrived in Cape Girardeau about 9:30 and saw a sign at Burger King that said 50 cent ice cream cones.  After checking in to the hotel we headed over for a treat.  As the boys in the front of the line were ordering everything but ice cream, the lady behind the counter says "no more ice cream or shakes"  and in unison many voices said "Whaaaaaattttttt?"  So we settled for ice cream novelties from the gas station.  It was a good day of travel....we are half-way home.  An early to bed (sort of) to get an early start tomorrow....good night from Missouri..... see you tomorrow Stewie!!!

We're in Arkansas!

1.5 hours from now we'll be landing in Cape Girardeau for another night at the Pear Tree Inn. After a lovely night's rest we'll get on the road around 8 and hopefully get into Stewartville around 6pm. We'll keep you updated!

Here's a photo of Zion, Hosanna and Zumbro kids playing mafia in the back of the bus in Arkansas.

Also included is a pic of Brendan, who tried to evade the cameras, but of course when you do that we "put it on the blog" or so we've been saying all week!

Saturday in NOLA - Practice Peacemaking

The day began with a long walk to the convention center and morning worship. The worship band was incredible.   The songs they led were rocking the center and still, this late in the week, some eyes were shut :) ! We checked and this band was put together just for the gathering....WOW!

After worship we hung out in the interaction center. Bumper cars, dodge ball, basketball and zip lines were done by many of our youth. It was here, that Sheryl said good-bye to her hair for locks of love. It was also here that Nikki gave blood for the first time and I am pretty sure it won't be her last!

We then headed out for lunch at The Riverwalk, where there were lots of options for everyone. The adults had New Orleans Chinese... a delicate blend of southern cuisine and fried rice, veggies, shrimp, and chicken, very good indeed and the youth had a little bit of every thing found in a food court. Then a little more shopping before heading for the hotel to get ready for our final night at the dome...Switchfoot!

The Super Dome was definitely Super!  The house band began the evening and they did a remarkable jobas they have all week.  Peter Mayer does a great job of putting together a house band for the gathering.  Then the speakers began:  One young man the evening with some very good advice for our young people : " As followers of Jesus we are called to speak the truth....Speak the truth even if your voice shakes!"  Some very powerful words that were menioned by several of our young people during small group time.

Next up was Greg Van Wald.....an 18 year old with some great dreams of making this world a better place.  I loved what he said, "Be the change you wish to see in the world." So very true!  He continued his message saying, " We need to reflect the light of God into the darkest places."  This brought the dome to their feet.

The final speaker, Rev. Ingram had a very troubled past.  She told our group about all the abuse that she had received in her life and how God saved her.  She said that "Hurt people, hurt people."  She went on to say that we need to be saint and sinner at the same time....in God's kingdom we are all the same....we are Citizens With The Saints.

The Super Dome ended with Switchfoot taking the stage.  What an incredible show they put on....they are one very incredible group to listen to.  I hope that all of you had a chance to be there with us through the live feed.  If you missed it....check out the pictures I will try to post tomorrow!

Our final night in New Orleans concluded with one more dance at the Sheraton....some great small  group time...and  LOTS of packing to get ready to leave tomorrow after worship.  Loading the bus at 7:00, worship at 9:30, and then a long day of travel.

This has been an incredible week and I want to thank all of the Zion parents for sharing your child with us this week.  You should be very proud, these young people were remarkable and they showed the love of Christ to many people in New Orleans. All of us chaperones/leaders were very lucky to spend an amazing week with such amazing kids.

This is the final blog from New Orleans....good night all..... I will let you know how tomorrow goes.... Later :)

Practice Discipleship Day Photos

Worshipping with youth from our synod!

We all got ponchos to survive our flash flood warning.

We met Miss B at Popeye's over lunch and after she welcomed us to New Orleans and thanked us for our work, she invited us to come visit her workplace...a Mardi Gras costume shop!

Day 4 - Practice Discipleship

Our Practice Discipleship day began a little later this morning and the youth got to sleep in until 7:30 or so.  As we traveled, with the entire synod (all in the our hotel) it was a flow of different colored shirts towards the Sheraton Hotel...getting out of the hotel this morning was the adventure...ours took us down some back stairs, through the loading dock, into the main area of the hotel...you should of seen the people on the dock look when we came cruising. :)

We had our meeting on the 5th floor and it began with a worship service that Anna participated in.  As we were entering, I got recruited for small group leader and the morning began.  Our SE Mn Bishop, Harold "Huck" Usgaard,  gave a very powerful message to our youth and really made us think about what discipleship really means.  We then broke off into our small groups for a series of excercise and bible reading to discuss the areas of discipleship: Study, Invite, Encourage, Serve, Give, Pray, Worship, .... all related to discipleship and our faith.  We then were to head out for the day.... scavenger hunt in the city... but the rain has everything for us on hold.  As I am writing this, a few of us our hanging out in the hotel and a few are heading out for some shopping and a visit to a Mardi Gras Shop.  New Orleans is currently in a Flash Flood Warning until midnight tonight...some reports indicating 4-6 inches of rain before it is done...could make for an interesting night.

The evening dome event allowed us the opportunity to sit on the main floor.  Our seats were not as good as opening night, but were still very good!  The music tonight was incredible...an old favorite, Lost and Found opened the evening and they are always fun.  Then Rehman Soul took the stage and their music was incredible.  Many of our young ones, including Anna headed to the front by the stage to rock with them.  For as excited as they got tonight, I can not imagine what will happen tomorrow night with Switchfoot!

The opening speaker tonight, Jamie Nabozny spoke about harrasement by classmates when a school system when the school did nothing to help him.  Jamie sued the school district for failure to stop the harassment and won a landmark case!  His message on bullying was unbelievable.  He talked about the pain he suffered in the school, initially verbal abuse in 7th grade and by his junior year in high school it became physical. He was told by the principle: " If you are going to be openly gay, you better get use to it."  His message meant a lot to some of our youth who had studied his documentary.

Then Diane Latiker spoke about gang violence in Chicago...she took kids off the streets to minister to them to stop the gang violence and give them a purpose in life.  There were as many as 75 kids at her home at one time and she made a real difference in so many lives.

Finally, the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize receipient, Leymah Gbowee spoke with a little humor and challenged us to use our gifts to make a better world. Each of our kids were touched by one or more of the speakers and this was the highlight for many of them.

Our evening concluded once again at the Sheraton.... it was a DRY walk with no more rain falling at the present time....it was another very good day and we look forward tomorrow as we Practice Peace Keeping and the Interaction Center...should be an amazing, God-filled day!

Good Night From New Orleans.... hoping tomorrow is a dry day!

Day 3 Practice Justice Day

Our service project for today was incredible. We had the opportunity to serve at a Homeless Shelter. Our morning began with worship in the Super Dome and then we headed for the shelter. When we arrived we worshiped again... with the people in the shelter. A very cool service... lots of testimonies and stories told, followed by lunch with some incredible homeless people. Stories were shared and I believe all of us were touched in ways we could not imagine! It would take too much time to write about Steve, but ask me about it and please, please pray for Steve... he is trying to change his life. After lunch we worked through out the shelter doing various projects..making beds, work in the kitchen, cleaning a warehouse, and some went out on the streets to witness to people living under the bridge by the shelter..all of us had our comfort zone stretched!

The evening session at the dome started with some food in Champion Square and a lot of rain.  The dome once again had a lot of good music and some more incredible speakers....a young lady, Megan Stubbs delivered a very special message and then the main speaker, Shane Clairborne was the guy that stole the show.  His message proclaiming all the injustices in the world, brought the entire dome to their feet multiple times.  His message was very powerful and a lot of great humor mixed in.  He was the highlight for many of our youth today at the dome....but most of the highs at small group time came from our service project. God let us hear stories most of us have never heard, let us serve where most of us have never served....and he moved through out the shelter and through out the city of New Orleans in ways He could only imagine!

The night concluded with our young people rocking and dancing at the Sheraton hotel.  The dance ended and we headed back for some great small group time....  Zion parents should be proud of each and everyone of the youth on this trip.  They touched lives and really made a difference today... God's Work....Their Hands

Tomorrow is Practice Discipleship day for our youth.  We will be worshiping with our entire SE Minnesota Synod and spending the morning in a morning bible study.  Can't wait to see what God is going to do tomorrow..... Good Night From New Orleans :)

Practice Justice Photos

Photos from our day at New Orleans Mission eating, chatting, worshipping and working in the community. It was a beautiful day!

Evening At The Dome

WOW..... what a great night of laughter, fun, music, and worship!  Our youth got to be in the dome early for our   live lip sinc.  It was an incredible experience...all the rehearsal, entry in a special gate, front row seating for the night and on the Big Screen live... it was an experience most of us will never forget.  The music tonight was also incredible...I hope that you had the chance to be there with us through the link that Anna sent out.

All the speakers tonight were incredible... Bishop Mark Hanson opened the gathering and declared the 2012 Youth Gathering officially had began.  Rev. Curry talked about gumbo and how God wanted all of us to be part of His Gumbo, a little hard to explain what he meant unless you know all the things that go into making gumbo good... it takes all of us to make God's kingdom complete.  But of all the speakers tonight, the biggest impact in the dome was from Nadia Bolz-Weber....the lady with all the tattoos kind of rocked the place.  She had an incredible message to send out to all of us that God doesn't care where we are in life....He just wants to be in ours!

After the evening program we had some weather that really dampened our spirits (just a little).  We were contained in the Dome because of the storm for about a half-hour.  Then when we did venture out, the lightning and rain continued and we got wet and watched the sky light up multiple times.  It was kind of scarey with that many people out on the street, but everything turned out fine .... except no hotel life and no food available...so it was apples, chips, and cookies...not a good supper, but at least we had a fine meal this afternoon.  Until tomorrow... which is our Practice Justice day....launching from the dome at 8:45 to go out into the city of New Orleans in our orange shirts.... time to share the love of Christ with our hearts and hands,  as Bishop Hanson said... "God's work, our hands."

Good night from New Orleans.....

Beignets Part Two

We finally got to taste these lovely New Orleans delicacies! The group left at 6:30am to get breakfast at Cafe Du Monde. It's a good thing we went early because soon after the line was growing and growing.

Day 3- 2nd Day In New Orleans!

Hey everyone,
Our day has been a pretty full day so far and the official gathering activities haven't even started.  After breakfast at the famous cafe, we headed out to the river walk and took a little ferry ride across the channel.  While we were on the boat, I visited with a local gentleman that told me about the day Katrina hit.  He was trying to evacuate with all the other people and got part way across the bridge where he remained for several hours.  He said that the people running everywhere for cover was a sight that he will never forget.  He told me that it changed his life forever..."money is not important at all, cause when you have money, and everything is gone, where would you spend it?"  He continued, "What is important is family and friends and that I am alive, I thank him, the one up above, everyday."

After our boat ride, we did some shopping in the French Quarter...lots of little shops .... lots of interesting people.... and most of our youth were carrying bags of items as we left and headed out to get some lunch.  We had lunch in a great restraunt..."Mothers Restraunt"  We had lots of great New Orleans cuisine with jambalaya, cray fish, chicken, poor boys, grits, calamari, grilled shrimp and debris (yes that is a food, the roast beef, in gravy, that falls off the main roast). Our waitress was awesome...a real hoot....and she really knew how to make us feel welcome and served our group remarkably!

As I update this blog.... it is hotel time... pool, weight room, naps, all happening ... as we begin to prepare for an evening of lip-synching, music, worship, fellowship and fun. Please be sure to go to the live webcams that will be broadcasting tonights activities (Anna sent out a link) ...it will be awesome!

Later....going to the pool...to see how the youth of Zion, are cooling off... pictures later....

Day 2 Of Travel and Day 1 in New Orleans

We left Missouri short one chaperone from the Rochester group.  Dan will be staying for a week in the hospital, as he had emergency surgery and an infection in his intestine.  Please keep him in your prayers. After a visit to the hospital we got on the road alot later then we wanted to and it did not look like we would get to New Orleans in time to register today...but God had a plan and our prayers were answered as we pulled up to the convention center with 2 minutes to spare.

The bus ride today had lots of games played.  Games of cribbage, Catch Phrase, and Mafia... Mafia is a story telling game of mystery...pretty fun!  The trip also included a couple of movies...Yes... the DVR was repaired. We enjoyed a little Ghost Busters to prepare for our tour tonight.

We toured New Orleans tonight with a Haunted Tour.  It was not very scarey at all...but some good history of New Orleans was covered and we saw some incredible buildings and architecture as we listened to some interesting stories of the haunted nature.   The night concluded with a large group meeting to discuss being safe in New Orleans and the trip in the morning for their famous pastry.  Good night everyone from New Orleans...it is lights out time!

Day 2 Of Travel

Playing a fast paced game on the bus!

Here we go again!

Early morning starbucks run and breakfast at the hotel...I think everyone slept like logs!  We are ready to head out for a day of traveling, straight thru to the big easy! As tickled as I was that yesterdays stop was ironically in my hometown, we are super pumped to hammer thru and get there! Our group of kids is (so far!) A dream group... Ninja dan is working on getting the dvd player working as we speak :-)
Keep us in your thoughts and prayers today..stay cool!

Day One NOLA

It was a great travel day on the bus for the Zion youth.... starting around 8:00 this morning.  We traveled all morning and stopped for lunch at a park in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.  We realized part way down, that the bus trip today was NOT going to include any movies....DVR sound not working... I will try to look at it tomorrow morning (no promises though).  Our youth were incredible...not a single complaint :)   During our small group time Mack said "We found other things to do!"  We arrived tonight about 7:00,  at Cape Girardeau and enjoyed a little pizza by the pool at the Pear Tree Inn.  After supper we had small group time and then a little R&R in the hotel rooms.  We will be up early tomorrow...breakfast starts at 5:15 with a Starbuck run at 6:00.  We do need prayers for one of the other Chaperones.... Dan from Hosanna in Rochester was taken to the hospital tonight by ambulance in a lot of pain.  Please pray that he can continue the trip with us.  Also please pray for lots of energy for us as we have another long day ahead and that we arrive in time to register early.  Lots of love from Missouri.......
